Standing at an impressive 4561 meters from sea level, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain is a trekker’s paradise. Similar to Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is a dormant volcano, located just 70km away from its more famous cousin. But don’t let its proximity to Kilimanjaro fool you – Mount Meru’s trekking is considered to be more complex and challenging, making it a top destination for experienced hikers.
As you embark on your trek to Mount Meru, be prepared for a short but steep climb that will test your limits both mentally and physically. The mountain forms the largest part of Arusha National Park and is surrounded by the stunning Ngurdoto Crater and Momella Lakes.
But it’s not just the scenery that makes Mount Meru a must-see destination. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of wildlife, including buffalo, giraffes, baboons, and even elephants. And if you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a rare black and white colobus monkey.
The trek of Mount Meru’s summit may be challenging, but the views from the top are well worth it. You’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. And as you make your way back down the mountain, you’ll be filled with a sense of accomplishment and pride that only comes from conquering a challenging trek.
